Background

Sori Yanagi was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1915. His father, Soetsu Yanagi started “Mingei (Japanese folk art)” promotion, which valued hand-crafted art of ordinary people and discovered beauty in everyday ordinary objects. Soetsu also helped to establish the Nihon Mingeikan, the Folk Crafts Museum of Japan.

Sori entered Tokyo Art School in 1934, where he studied both art and architecture. He was impressed by Le Corbusier as well as by Charlotte Perriand when she worked in Japan in the early 1940s, and he got more interested in “design and objects” rather than paintings and buildings.

After World War II, Sori designed many kinds of products such as furniture, three-wheeled vehicle, Olympic cauldron, and pedestrian overpass. The water kettle was one of his most famous designs, which included the Butterfly chair in 1954 as well as his porcelain and silverware series.

Nihon Yoshokki Co Ltd was founded in 1955 in Tsubame City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan, which is the center of cutlery and steel manufacturing. It manufactures most of the Sori Yanagi-designed kitchenware and tableware.

Best all stainless mixing bowls on the market

These are outstanding in quality and match up perfectly with Sori Yanagi colanders. In fact, you're not doing yourself any favors if you're buying just the bowls without the colanders (unless you already have the colanders). The combination of the two makes almost any cooking preparation task that involves washing produce substantially easier. The more you use the two - the more additional uses you find for them. Being all stainless they're dishwasher safe. There are two things however that some people find a bit irritating - the bottom of these bowls isn't very wide. Which means that when they're heavily loaded with food and standing on a slippery counter, such as a granite, they will slide easily and may seem to be unstable. The top lip is narrow and this creates a resting "rim" for the colander. That way there is a space between the outside of the colander and inside of the bowl when the properly sized colander sits on the appropriate bowl. This allows the water to drain into the bowl. Without the colander though, when used just for mixing (or making dough), the narrow top lip may appear to be less convenient at first.

    Gorgeous bowl!

I bought the 19 cm mixing bowl for my son to play with. I got the colander to go along with it. The quality is wonderful, the bowl is lovely to touch, and my son loves playing with it so far. I’m going to order the larger one for myself.

Love this collection! They are beautiful to look at, and they work superbly as well. And when you start using Yanagi's other tools with them, you can feel the artist's knowledge of form and function. For example, his whisk rests in these bowls without the bowls tipping, even though they are light, the balance is perfect. The whisk glides around the bowl and preparation seems to flow more efficiently. The series of sizes and shapes that nest within each other are all useful. I think this set may end up being the only one needed for cooking preparation.
