Slice and Shred Like a Samurai

The product we used:

From Fear to Zen While Slicing

Cooked potato slices

If you're like me, you'd like to be able to slice an onion into paper-thin slices as fast as chef Gordan Ramsey, but every time you look down at the knife as it brushes against your knuckles your heart fills with dread. Your fingers are a knife's edge away from disaster. Take it nice and slow. The slices don't need to be that thin.

But there is still hope for safe, consistently thin (or thick) slices of any fruit or vegetable you can imagine. There is a way to get the perfect slice over and over again while maintaining the zen-like calm of a Kamakura-period samurai: A Samurai Slicer.

Using the Samurai Slicer

The Samurai Slicer is a kitchen slicer that can turn any fruit or vegetable into a million atom-thin slices without taking your appendages with them.

Using the Samurai Slicer is easy.

Adjust the thickness of the slice

Take the Samurai Slicer and adjust how thick or thin your slices will be using the slider on the side. Slices can be between 0.5mm and 2mm thin.

Add extra comb blades (optional)

If you want to slice your fruits or vegetables into thin strings or shred them, then flip the slicer over, insert one of the included comb blades, and then screw the teeth secure with the included hand screw. You should expect to need to use a bit more muscle to get the job done, but you'll have ancient Japanese military dictators rising from their graves in order to come get a bite of your delicious salads.

For zen-like calm–to slice with a heart as still as the top of a koi pond in a Kyoto summer–place your fruit or vegetable on the slicer, then mount the included spiky finger guard and commence slicing. Of course, take it slowly at first. Contemplate the short-lived nature of youth and plan your honorable end on the kitchen battlefield. As you get more experience, you can increase your pace and get the job done faster–slicing your way through the enemy's onions and potatoes with stoic silence of soul.

When slicing, it's recommended that you move your fruits and vegetables along the left side of the slicer for a safe and secure slice. Slice on the right side if you feel like going rogue.

Caring for the Samurai Slicer

  • Clean by hand with a wet sponge before use.
  • After use, wash and wipe dry.
  • Not dishwasher-safe. Don't wash in the dishwasher. Doing so may deform the slicer. Wash by hand.
  • The blades on this kitchen slicer are very sharp. Keep away from children!
